Circulator, video 2002 by Hrafnkell Sigurdsson

Hrafnkell Sigurdsson is a video artist from Iceland.

I wanted to exhibit this video at WHcreation's Gender exhibition. Unfortunately it did not happen, but still I  would like to feature it here. I think it has a strong bold statement about GENDER. The video is not available online, so here is a screen shot. I think it is self explanatory...

THE ONE AND ONLY - BILL VIOLA

I can not write a blog about art and design which inspires me without featuring my idol, Bill Viola. This video artist needs no introduction. He is internationally recognized as one of today’s leading artists in the field of video art.

In 1994 I was lucky enough to sit at his lecture. Listening to this humble man talk about his process as a video artist, completely changed my view on contemporary art.

I thought it would be interesting to post here a few of his online interviews about his work. It gives a gimps to his thought and work process.

The Clock, 2010 by Christian Marclay

Duration: 24 hours

a few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to watch a piece of the video art masterpiece The Clock by the American artist Christian Marclay currently based in London.

Produced over the course of two years, Christian Marclay's The Clock combines clips from thousands of films into a 24-hour video collage that also functions as a working clock.

It is so rare to experience an art work and feel you have just witnessed a current masterpiece which will profoundly make its imprint on art history. I will never forget the experience of sitting on the floor in a crowded room watching all the movie bits patched together into a captivating statement about time and western culture.

music video | Torgny - Big Day

Dir. Emil Trier / Norway / 2010
I find it very refreshing to watch a music video which is also an independent creation. This is video is actually a short film about bored schoolgirls experiences during one day. It is confronting, thought provoking, and beautiful at the same time. For a moment it is not clear if the music was done for the video or the other way around.

Human interaction in the LIFT (2001) by Marc Isaac

A Brilliant video I came across in the Future Short channel on youtube. Filmmaker Marc Isaacs sets himself up in a London tower block lift. The residents come to trust him and reveal the things that matter to them creating a humorous and moving portrait of a vertical community.

STOP MOTION VIDEO

In the past few years we have seen another “old school” trend returning – the frame by frame videos, now called STOP MOTION. In the age of Avatar 3D movie and Pixar computer animated films, it is nice to see some old fashioned frame by frame action. Although it can very easily fall in the trap of fashion victim or an easy solution, it can still be an impressive video as long as it is clearly serving and emphasizing the concept of the video and showing off the great effort behind the actual making of the video.

Here are some great examples that will WOW you for sure:

ME by Ahree Lee. She has taken a picture of herself everyday for 3 years and put it together in a video showing the days fly by at roughly a week per second, blending together to make a new image that transforms over time.

COMBO a collaborative animation by Blu and David Ellis.

DEADLINE by Bang-yao Liu. This is his senior project. A stop motion made from Post-It notes, shows how he struggles with ideas just before the deadline.

Two music videos:

HER MORNING ELEGANCE by Oren Lavie, Yuval & Merav Nathan

AUTUMN STORY by Yanni Kronenberg and Lucinda Schreiber
